Culturally Sensitive Integration Camps for Children & Youth

At the Diaspora Women Arise, we understand that the integration process for immigrant children and youth is often overlooked.  The challenges they face—ranging from adjusting to a new education system to balancing cultural identity—can be overwhelming.  That’s why we’ve created the Culturally Sensitive Integration Camps, a program designed to help African immigrant children and youth (ages 6-18) integrate into U.S. society while maintaining their cultural pride and identity.

This program is available both online and in-person to ensure accessibility to all our clients across the country. We aim to provide a safe, nurturing space where children and youth can thrive socially, academically, and emotionally.

Program Highlights

By participating in the Culturally Sensitive Integration Camps, African immigrant youth will be better prepared to thrive in their new home country—academically, socially, and emotionally—while staying connected to their cultural roots.

Understanding the US Education System

  • Age-appropriate workshops to help children and youth understand the U.S. school system, including grading, rights, and resources available (e.g., free lunches, after-school programs).
  • Academic support, such as tutoring and peer mentoring, to bridge any gaps caused by differences in previous education systems.

Embracing Cultural Identity

  • Activities that celebrate African heritage and encourage youth to be proud of their roots while embracing diversity.
  • Support in navigating bicultural identities—helping youth integrate without assimilating, recognizing their role in enriching the U.S. community.

Social Integration & Peer Mentorship

  • Guidance on building healthy friendships and making wise social choices, avoiding risky influences like gang affiliation or bullying.
  • Peer-mentorship programs connecting older youth with younger participants for support, advice, and friendship.

Mental Health & Well-being

  • Mental health workshops addressing the stresses of acculturation, trauma, and adjusting to a new life, with resources for coping and resilience.
  • Safe spaces for discussing mental health and accessing professional support if needed.

Responsible Technology Use

Workshops teaching digital safety, healthy internet habits, and how to navigate the world of unlimited online access, including how to deal with cyberbullying, online predators, and inappropriate content.

Parenting in the US

Specialized workshops for parents on understanding the U.S. education system, effective parenting strategies, and how to support children’s mental and emotional health while balancing work and family life.

Program Delivery

  • In-person camps will take place in community locations across the country, offering interactive sessions and group activities.
  • Online camps will provide virtual workshops, peer-mentoring, and group discussions to ensure access for all.

Expected Outcomes of the Program

  • Youth will gain confidence in navigating the U.S. education system, form positive relationships, and make informed social decisions.
  • Participants will feel proud of their African heritage while embracing their place in American society, contributing to their school and community.
  • Parents will be empowered to support their children’s academic and social adjustment, ensuring a smoother transition for the entire family.
